You’ve probably heard people talking about smart speakers, smart devices, smart cities, and smart libraries. Well … how about something a bit more practical?
Can you use a smart device to meet practical needs at the library? Why yes. Yes you can.
Here’s one example from my library.
We are using GE myTouchSmart WiFi Smart Switches. This “smart switch” is simply an outlet adapter that connects to a smartphone app or other smart devices, like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant virtual assistants.
What’s it do for my library? We have 8 small study rooms (we call them Team Rooms) that people can reserve. Each room has a flat screen monitor and computer. Those monitors are on all day long, and the monitor’s menu settings doesn’t include a timer or a “sleep mode” setting. If we want to turn the monitors on in the morning and off at night, we have to visit each one.
Or … we can just buy 8 of these smart switches, and put the switches on a timer. Problem solved – the monitors now turn on and off automatically, without us having to do anything.
Sweet!
