meJust a little fyi for those of you who frequent my blog via the website rather than the RSS feed…

I plan on playing around with some different themes, so my old green/yellow theme will be going bye-bye. I’ll most likely use a “pre-made” theme this time around, and tweak as needed. Much easier (since I now have no time since I’m now doing amazing cool things :-), and more importantly, my current theme doesn’t play well with the newest version of WordPress.

I’m also wanting to move to a three-column design and experiment with sidebar add-ons, and so I’m picking a theme that already has that built-in (along with WordPress Widgets).

So – what does that really change? Not much. The look will change and morph. The content? Still the same ole’ Dave.

Fun with my New Mac and File Conversion

apple keyUpdate: Yep – it was the Word 2007 problem. On the Mac, I saved the
file as a normal Word XP doc and as a normal Open Office doc (and
emailed the text to myself as well) – all worked perfectly!

I’m another one of those pesky new mac owners… and I’ve been experimenting with something on and off today. I have a file that I typed this morning in NeoOffice. I need to get it onto my PC at work. Simple, eh? Not so fast!

This morning, I saved the file as a Word 2007 document (this was my mistake, I think), not thinking that “dang, I don’t HAVE Word 2007 yet” – but oh well. I figured I could open it anyway.

WRONG.

Office 2003 on a PC didn’t like the file – it asked me to download some add-on thing from Microsoft so I could open Word 2007 files. But the add-on (FileFormatConverters) didn’t like my PC, and wouldn’t install. OK, I thought – no problem. I’ll just open up my copy of Open Office at work, and I’ll be done.

WRONG.

After installing an Open Office update, my file still didn’t open. So… I remembered Zamzar. I thought “Zamzar will convert this file – Zamzar converts EVERYTHING!”

WRONG.

It apparently doesn’t like the Mac flavor of a Word 2007 docx file that was created with NeoOffice (my guess here).

Shoot.

So – I’m just going to turn on my Mac (it’s at the office with me), copy/paste the text I need into an email to myself, and – BINGO. That WILL work. (and to those thinking “Dave, why didn’t you do that in the first place?” I knew I could do it the EASY way… I wanted to see if it would work THIS way, ok?).

I’m still loving the Mac, and I don’t think it’s a Mac-PC issue. I think it’s probably more of a Word 2007 converter issue. Beats me!

Non-Library Blogs Meme

I’ve been tagged in this non-library blogs meme thing at least twice now, so I feel I must respond! Here are five of my favorite non-library blogs that I’m reading right now:

  1. Read/WriteWeb – great stuff about web 2.0 and emerging trends. Tends to go more in-depth than other emerging trend blogs, which I like.
  2. Daily Dilbert – not really a blog I suppose, but still – Dilbert is great.
  3. Worship Guitar Guy – a guy who writes about using electric guitar in modern rock worship settings – right down my alley.
  4. Creating Passionate Users – Kathy Sierra’s blog about, well, about creating passionate users. Always inspirational.
  5. The Hype Machine – I just discovered this. It aggregates a bunch of other mp3/music blogs, and schmushes all the info (and tunes) together. I’ll never have to buy music again!

SO – those are some of my favorite non-library blogs right now. I’m not going to tag individuals (because it’s late, and I’m uninspired tonight). Instead, if you read this blog, and you DO, in fact, blog… consider yourself tagged.

Helping a Friend

From a friend of mine, “Just curious if you know of anyone in the University community who is capable of translating Iranian Arabic script?”

He’s a military friend who just got back from Iraq, took some photos, and is now wondering what those photos say.
