My First Web 2.0 Presentation is Tomorrow

I’ve been getting ready for my first Web 2.0 presentation – should be fun! I thought others might be interested in my version… so here’s what I plan to do:

  1. Introduce the concept of Web 2.0 – definitions and descriptions
  2. Link it to Library 2.0, showing other links as well (ie., Law 2.0, media 2.0, etc) – just so attendees know they’re not alone in this learning curve!
  3. Explain RSS, RSS Feed Readers, and Blogs in a chunk – This provides a good intro to many of the essential elements of Web 2.0 – interactivity and feeds.
  4. Playtime – post in a blog, subscribe to it in bloglines, make a comment…
  5. Next chunk – Tagging, Flickr, and Bookmark Managers
  6. Playtime – look at my Flickr account, tag the photo I’ll take of them with my Treo, explore bookmark managers…
  7. Wikis – Define and explore – I’ll have everyone play around in a pbwiki.
  8. IM – define and explore – I might even IM someone using Meebo, so be warned anyone who’s on my buddy list!
  9. Last chunk – podcasting and videocasting – describe and explore. Possibly watch a videocast (if it downloads easily in the lab)
  10. Answer the “why would a library want to do these things” questions, and provide some easy “first steps.”

David’s First Webcast Presentation

webcasting EquipmentI just finished my first webcast – it was a blast! The webcast was for the Education Institute, and was on creating library website subject guides.For those of you who might venture into doing a webcast sometime, a few pointers:

  • If possible, have a backup phone. See the nice Polycom conference phone in the photo? I didn’t use it because of some “ocean like” static. It worked great the day before… go figure.
  • Make sure you have a good internet connection.
  • Make sure to pace yourself – since you are, in essence, talking to yourself in an empty room (that’s what it feels like anyway), you might ramble on, rush through slides, etc – just pretend you’re in a room full of people. Not too much of a problem for me, since I’ve been a radio dj in the past – same concept.
  • Set up early. I set up everything about 30 minutes before, then went online about 15 minutes before the start of my presentation. Since I had “phone issues,” I had to call in about three times on different phones. Last minute testing, well, needs time! (which I had, thankfully)
  • Have fun!

ALA and Speaking

Jenny Levine posted her experiences with speaking at ALA and PLA. I’ve had two similar experiences:

1. Spoke at ALA, wasn’t a member. Luckily, my library paid my way, so I had airfare and hotel funding. But ALA was terribly strict about my non-member status – I could only attend the exhibit hall for one day (and couldn’t go to any other program that day).

2. Invited to speak at PLA, wasn’t a member. Library couldn’t fund… ALA/PLA didn’t want to fund… I didn’t speak.

If that’s not bad enough, I know of at least one state library association who does the same thing. Why on earth do they do this? “Well… that’s what ALA does…”

ALA – you are supposed to be a shining example of how to do IT right (whatever IT might be). Other associations look to you for guidance. Please – DO IT RIGHT. Conference speakers are INTEGRAL to a conference. At $130 – 235 a person for registration * 20,00 attendees… plus 900 exhibitors * however much you charge them for booths… I’d think you’d be able to AT LEAST waive the conference fee.

At least.

Presentation Reminder

I gave a 4-hour presentation yesterday for a library-related organization. It was fun! And I realized that one should always be prepared – especially with Powerpoint presentations. The computer I used for presenting didn’t have a handy USB port… and my presentation was on a USB key. Bummer, right?

Wrong! Because I usually email my Powerpoint slides to myself. So instead of having to figure out some nasty USB/Network/”Can you copy this for me” thing, I simply downloaded my presentation, and I was off.

So here’s what I usually take with me for a presentation:
1. a paper copy, in case the electricity goes out (and I tend to write notes on it, anyway)
2. a USB key
3. a copy emailed to myself

These three copies haven’t failed me yet!
