It’s Banned Books Week this week. Check out this cool video my library’s Teen Advisory Board made (with some help from Rebecca, one of our teen librarians)! I thought the teens did a great job with the video. How often do you hear kids talking about censorship and intellectual freedom?
Please watch – thanks!
That’s a great video, David. I hope a bunch of parents watch it!
Thanks Rachel!
Great video! I added it to my FB page after reading this: http://bit.ly/ZbwdbX
I am a newb, I had to stand up and request not to read a book in High School; because it was spiritually disturbing to me. Innocence is sacrificed for the sake intellect; which I feel has been a major loss for humanity in the name of freedom. Sorry they didn’t ban more books and that we were not so sophisticated that we never blush and defy anyone from protecting our minds & hearts. Welcome to the new world, you can probably never go back.
Thanks for listening.
Sadie – for what it’s worth, I did the same thing in high school. I refused to read something – I don’t even remember what it was now.
But here’s the difference: I should personally be able to chose to not read something – to self-censor. For example, I’ll never read 50 Shades of Grey, and would probably hate it.
But a library should want to carry all the books, all the viewpoints. Because a good library represents the WHOLE community – not just one little part.
